Fallon & Byrne
A new arrival on the Dublin grocery scene – Fallon & Byrne – Ireland’s first food hall, restaurant and wine cellar opened in March of this year. Fallon & Byrne is located on Exchequer Street in a beautifully restored warehouse building, previously used as a telephone exchange by Eircom. It has 20ft ceilings, wonderful old cast iron pillars and a large skylight at the back that floods the shop with natural light. Among many of the delights in the food hall is a juice bar, an in-store butchers, a long deli counter, a coffee bar and a well-stocked cheese and charcuterie counter.
Fallon & Byrne encompasses 3 levels – the main food hall, wine bar and cellar downstairs plus a Brasserie style restaurant. Fallon & Byrne also has a local supermarket for young professionals living in the city.

Technology to improve efficiency
The Fallon & Byrne philosophy is to sell great food at affordable prices and to combine quality with convenience and great service. An integral part of the business is the technology installed in the company which has been extremely successful to date. Prior to opening the food hall the management team set about viewing a number of stock control systems before they decided to use Leaders, a business partner of hardware distributor PC Cubed. The SAM4Win™ Stock Control System is very user friendly and easy to operate. The package utilises MS SQL® database and “Crystal Report Writer®” for generating reports and graphs.

Solution
CASIO DT-X10 wireless hand-held terminals are used for stocktaking, placing orders, price checking and modifying, wastage control and label printing. The terminals were chosen for their ergonomic design, single-handed operation and hardwearing durability. Leaders installed a wireless network that encompassed the entire shop area and storage units. As Sammy Bedair of Leaders Enterprises explains“We made sure that the wireless network was operational in every corner of this large shop floor and the storeroom’’. All of the hand-held terminal functions are updated on the main server in ‘real time’. This means that when the user presses save on the terminal the server is updated instantaneously. In addition, the information displayed on the terminals will always be up-to-date, reflecting ‘current’ live data on the server. As data for all departments is controlled on the one central server, this has helped reduce management time and associated costs. When the main server has been updated with the relevant product information and prices, the checkout units are then updated in ‘real time’.

Managing Stock Levels
The solution now enables the company to drill down into fine details of stock levels, enabling quick reference for all managers throughout the store. The Leaders solution was chosen because it it easy to use and enables managers in each section to compile daily reports on transactions and stock levels increasing efficiency throughout this dynamic working environment. Each section manager can now report on the best selling products, and what products yield the highest and lowest margins.

The system can also set different levels of accountability allowing managers to improve on service, drop a product or carry more stock when necessary.

The product DT-X11 (follow-up model from DT-X10)
